Camping with Your Kids in The Backyard

Are your children tired of staying indoors, and desperate to stretch their legs and go camping? Well, as a parent, that’s certainly something you should encourage. But it’s not always easy to find a camping ground you can get to easily. And your other personal and professional commitments may prevent you from taking a longer trip. Let that not deter you though. With a little bit of initiative, you and your kids can have an enjoyable camping experience no further than your very own backyard!

A DIY tent is better than store-bought ones
Just tie a strong rope between two poles or trees, put a heavy bedsheet (not a fitted one) or a comforter in a way so that the ends are touching the ground. Now put heavy weights on all four corners. Put another comforter inside the tent and make it super comfortable with lots of pillows.

Use flower pots to light up a fire
Campfires are a cool idea, but keep it safe – take a clay flower pot and put firewood in it to light up the fire. Bring on those marshmallows now!

Help kids make their own food
S’mores are a great idea as they are easy to make and are all-time favorites. Just make them hold the marshmallow over the fire, dip it in chocolate sauce and roll it on crumbled Graham crackers.

Get those busybodies to explore nature
Among the many tips, one of the most common camping ideas is to let your kids be one with nature. Give your kids a list of things to collect, depending on what season it is and what’s easily available. These could be stones, dry leaves, pine cones, and so on. Later make them sit with all their bounty and ask them to create something.

If it is summer, bring out the pool
Get the kiddie pool out in your backyard near the camp. Let them splash, play and have fun under the sun. Let them be wild and do just whatever they want – always keeping safety in mind, of course!

Put on some music and shake your legs
The game starts with the youngest member dancing and when he/she taps someone’s head, they start dancing too. When the leader says “dance-off”, everyone starts dancing fast; they stop and race for their seats when he/she says “dance over”. The last person to sit will be the new dance leader.

Night time bowling is fun
One of the top camping ideas is to have a DIY bowling arena. All you need is a few plastic bottles of the same height and a small basketball that would be heavy enough for the kids. Also, buy glow sticks, put them in the bottles, and arrange them like they do in bowling.

Movie under the stars
Watching a movie under the stars can be a lot of fun for the kids. Make a projector screen at home by attaching a clean white bedsheet with a square piece of cardboard, or just put a wooden frame on it to keep it crease-free. Use your computer or a Bluetooth speaker and connect the DVD signal to your projector.

Have a shadow puppet show
One of the popular camping activity ideas is to arrange for a puppet show. At night, get inside the tent with the kids, switch on the torchlight and shine it on the wall of the tent. Tell the kids a story that involves a few animals or scary monsters, make shadows on the wall, and pretend to be them.

Stargazing
Show the kids a few stars and constellations in the clear night sky. Tell them some stories from Greek mythology that will help them remember the names of the stars.
