How to Take Care of Your Color-Dyed Hair

Are you struggling to take care of your recently colored and dyed hair? Don’t worry! You can easily manage by following a few simple pointers. The underlying idea is to maintain the moisture of your hair. Most American women, some studies claim as many as 70-75%, color their hair. Colored hair is more porous than normal hair, leading to loss of color from the hair every time it gets wet because of sweat. Here are some tips to battle this:

Use only high-quality hair colors
When you use low-quality hair colors, the chances of losing the color is higher, and as a result, you will end up spending more to recolor it. So it is best to invest in high-quality hair colors. Check if it is free of ammonia and contains natural oils.

Shampoo your colored hair less often
It is known that water washes away the color. The simplest way to avoid this is to shampoo less often so that you are exposing the color to less water. Shampoo twice or thrice a week, and definitely not more than that.

Avoid shampoo for two days after coloring
As with any color, it always takes time for the color to set on your hair. When you wash your hair the next day or second, you tend to wash away the color too. The best way is to shampoo at least two days later than the day of coloring.

Use a shower cap on days when you are not shampooing
Do not expose your hair to the shower on days when you are not shampooing your hair, as this will lead to the color being washed away. Use a shower cap.

Use cold water while shampooing
The heat in the water can remove the color of the hair. When you are shampooing, use only cold water, or at most, lukewarm water.

Try to use conditioner alone if possible
Shampoos remove colors more than the conditioners. Whenever possible, try to go with conditioners alone and avoid using shampoos.

Use a conditioner almost every time you use a shampoo
Using a color protecting conditioner every time you shampoo is a great way to protect the hair. Also, it gives you a shiny and fine look. If you are someone who already has fine hair, condition the tips of the hair to make it even.

Avoid sulfates
Sulfates can strip color from your hair. Find shampoos that do not contain sulfates and use them.

Use color protecting shampoo

Invest in the best conditioner in town
When you don’t invest in a good conditioner, you run the risk of losing the color from newly dyed hair. You must not hesitate to get the best conditioner, that helps to protect the color. Conditioners containing oils like Tahitian Monoi and Ojon nut would be your best bet. They create a physical barrier to protect your tresses from the color bleaching effects of shampoo and will reduce fading too.

Add Smoothness and luster to your dyed hair
Deep conditioning treatment once a week will help in adding smoothness and luster to the hair. Here is how you can do it:

  • Apply treatment to the damp hair.
  • Comb it from roots to tips.
  • Form a bun with your hair.
  • Pin it up in place.
  • Wrap it up in a towel.
  • Leave treatment for 30 minutes
  • Rinse it out for softer and shinier hair.

Use leave-in treatments to protect the hair
Some leave-in conditioners protect the colored hair. These leave in conditioners are effective against heat and damage. If you are someone who uses blow dryers often, you must definitely make use of these conditioners.
