Laser Hair Removal: What to Expect During a Treatment
Lasers may sound like the stuff of a sci-fi movie! But in fact, laser hair removal is one of the most popular and effective ways to get rid of unwanted hair. Now a lot of people may be a little intimidated by the idea of having a laser pointed at their face. It is a medical procedure after all!
Well, you may safely set your fears aside! Read on to familiarize yourself with what happens during a laser hair removal treatment, and also to alleviate your fears about going under the laser. Here’s what you should expect during a laser hair removal procedure:
Before your treatment:
Get a trim
Prior to the laser, your technician will trim the hair you want to be removed so it sticks up a few millimetres through the skin.
Adjust the laser
Training is vital, and it takes a qualified technician to properly adjust the laser according to several factors—including for the area, coarseness, and color of your hair and skin.
Apply safety gear
During a laser hair removal treatment, the technician will provide you with eye protection to protect your eyes from the powerful laser light. He or she will also apply a cooling gel to protect the skin during treatment.
During your treatment:
Engage the laser
This is the exciting part. The technician will direct a concentrated laser beam into the area you want to be treated, to destroy the hair at the follicle.
Apply cooling agent
Immediately after your treatment, your technician will apply some type of cooling lotion or gel and may apply an ice pack directly to the treatment area to decrease inflammation, redness, and discomfort. Don’t be alarmed if the treatment area feels slightly sunburnt.
