Smoking is the biggest risk factor for COPD. About a quarter of all smokers will ultimately develop the disease.

COPD can be caused by the following:

• Smoking
• Second hand smoking
• Environmental irritants
• Pollution
• Poor ventilated home
• Poorly treated previous infections
• Multiple viral infections
