Macronutrients

The three primary nutrient classes — carbohydrates, proteins, and fats — that provide energy (measured in calories). Each gram of carbohydrate or protein yields approximately 4 calories; each gram of fat yields approximately 9 calories.

Micronutrients

Vitamins and minerals required by the body in small quantities to support processes such as immune function, bone formation, and enzyme activity. Unlike macronutrients, they provide no direct energy.

Dietary Fibre

Indigestible carbohydrate found in plant foods. Soluble fibre dissolves in water and can help moderate blood glucose and cholesterol levels; insoluble fibre adds bulk to stool and supports digestive regularity.

Glycaemic Index (GI)

A scale (0–100) ranking carbohydrate-containing foods by how quickly they raise blood glucose compared to pure glucose or white bread. Lower GI foods produce a more gradual glucose response, which may benefit blood sugar management.

Glycaemic Load (GL)

A measure that accounts for both the GI of a food and the amount of carbohydrate in a typical serving. GL gives a more practical picture of a food's actual impact on blood glucose than GI alone.

Complete Protein

A protein source containing all nine essential amino acids in sufficient quantities. Animal foods (meat, eggs, dairy) and certain plant foods (soy, quinoa) are considered complete proteins.

Essential Amino Acids

The nine amino acids the human body cannot synthesize on its own and must obtain through diet. They are critical for protein synthesis, tissue repair, and metabolic regulation.

Saturated Fat

A type of dietary fat found mainly in animal products and some tropical oils that is solid at room temperature. Current guidelines generally recommend limiting saturated fat intake, though the evidence on its relationship to cardiovascular risk continues to be studied.

Unsaturated Fat

The proportion of a nutrient that is actually absorbed and used by the body after ingestion. Bioavailability varies by nutrient form, food matrix, cooking method, and individual gut health.

Dietary Pattern

The overall combination of foods and beverages regularly consumed, evaluated as a whole rather than in terms of individual nutrients. Public health research increasingly focuses on dietary patterns (e.g., Mediterranean, DASH) rather than single nutrients.

Energy Density

The number of calories contained per gram or per unit volume of a food. High-energy-dense foods deliver many calories in small amounts; low-energy-dense foods (like most vegetables) deliver fewer calories relative to their weight or volume.
