What Are Macronutrients?
Macronutrients are the three categories of nutrients that supply your body with energy (calories) and the raw materials it needs to function. Unlike micronutrients such as vitamins and minerals — which the body requires in small amounts — macronutrients are needed in relatively large quantities every day. Each gram of carbohydrate and protein provides approximately 4 kilocalories; each gram of fat provides approximately 9 kilocalories.

Proteins: Building Blocks for Structure and Function
Proteins are composed of amino acids — organic compounds the body uses to build and repair tissues, produce enzymes and hormones, support immune function, and transport molecules through the bloodstream. Of the 20 amino acids, nine are considered essential, meaning the body cannot synthesize them and must obtain them from food.
Complete protein sources (containing all nine essential amino acids) include animal products such as meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and dairy.
